Sail of an Eye
“Sail of an Eye” started off being the chosen body part; an eye, which I was trying to develop as realistically as possible. The piece would get more and more abstract as I was doing more wire sketches (some of which are seen below), reducing the models to the simplest elements. The final piece was constructed by rod wire welding, which was then skinned in velon, acetate plastic and metal wire. In relation to the eye component, I wanted to add the sense of protection; the sort of safety the eyelids provide to the eyeball. While skinning the rod outline, it reminded me of the spray-hood in a sailboat and how it provides shelter to sailors during harsh conditions.
